Never say these 10 things to a single mom

Parenting on your own is stressful and limit pushing. Laughing on rough days keeps us sane for the good days. After all even if we are doing all the heavy lifting of raising a human being we do get all the best cuddles, funny tales and un-ending love. Not all bad right? Staying positive and upbeat, laughing at our mistakes and going with the flow of the day is vital to keeping your sanity. For a good chuckle I have put together a handy little roster of things one should avoid saying to single moms or dads, because well, poopy diapers have been known to go flying... just saying.

Re-wiring what our minds consider appropriate or good advice is a great way to learn confidence in our parenting. No one knows how to parent perfectly but demanding lots of respect and a little humor about parenting helps all of us single moms.

1. Well you wanted them so don't complain.
2. I'm so tired.
3. Yeah, sometimes I just can't bother to cook either. So I order (insert totally not kid friendly food).
4. Maybe you should try being sweeter so you can get a husband.

5. It's to be expected that he wouldn't behave as well since it's just you at home.

6. Should you be buying that purse? Shouldn't you spend it on your child?

7. Where are his socks? Isn't he cold?

8. Isn't he too old to be breastfeeding?

9. Don't you regret not having a father for your child?

10. Make him stop screaming!

Hey there Daddy: Holding fathers as responsible as mothers

Hey there Daddy
Holding fathers as responsible as mothers

Picture
Why is all the responsibility of parenting laid on a mother's shoulders? We blame and degrade single mothers even by way of blaming them for their child's deadbeat dad.
I hear such casual comments about single moms that I often find myself nodding in agreement. When will we, as women, agree to cast the shadow of fault in the right direction and not at each other?

What are some easy steps to help us hold men accountable?
1.  Start with the men closest to you.
2.  Reach out and support single moms.
3. Talk. Be conscious of how you talk about fatherhood.
4. Show your daughters and sons how to treat others and how to be treated.
5. Speak up. When you hear a man being proud or indifferent to being a deadbeat father let them know more is expected of them.
6. Use your skills. Whether you are an artist, a writer, a reporter or a waiter use your ability to communicate.

Picture
Do you believe that women are more responsible for children? I often talk at length with family and friends about parenting. Something which frequently comes up is whether men or women love and naturally take to parenting more. I am of the thought that men are just as naturally inclined and blessed to love, tend to and care for their children as women. I see no emotional gap between our genders that would allow for the sheering of responsibility based on gender. Letting men off the hook is not a kind thing to do. We lower our expectations and show men, including our sons, that we don't think very highly of them.
Lets be brave and hold fathers accountable for good parenting and for the welfare of their children just as much a mother. My son will grow up with the expectations I and other people set on him. I want him to have the self respect to know he is kind, smart and good. That as a man he can raise beautiful children and is just as important as a mom. That men and women are equal in their ability to love and foster a wonderful home life. If I let other fathers off the hook then I am teaching my son that he is not valuable enough for others to have high expectations of.

Avoid the Burn: protect your skin

Times of day, glare and the importance of shade

Picture
Let us not forget the horrible burns of our childhood. I come from a family of sun worshiping hippies who were only conservative with their sunscreen application.  I try not to go overboard with my son and his sun safety but He has a hat with a neck flap, kiddie sunblock and a big beach umbrella that follows us around. I wear sun-gear swim shirts, big hat and layers of sunblock.
I have had several friends with years long battles over skin cancer, it is frightening and we help prevent many cases by being aware of how we treat our skin in the sun. Vacations bring in awesome weather, sunny beach days, lots of swimming and long hours spent in the strong sun.

Picture
We can prioritize our health by wearing the large brim hat, putting on a loose, lightweight shirt for hikes and wearing enough sunblock if we are going to be outside all day at the BBQ.

TIP: Spots we miss with the sunblock often include your Ears, Hands, back of your shoulders and tops of your feet.

Put sunscreen on your ears, back of neck and back of hands by dolloping a dime sized amount on your fingers and applying to neck, hands and ears in order. I find that a spray sunblock is much easier for getting good coverage on the wild, run away beast-boy.

Hats are a easy way to keep in the shade while not having to continue putting on sunblock. If you overheat easily like I do (be glad you've never traveled with me dear readers, I'm a hot mess if it gets above 70 degrees) wear straw hats and even consider the benefits of a visor hat which lets your head breathe, your hair get a bit of sun and can be worn very loosely to avoid headaches. My son has decided he now hates hats so I try to shade him with my parasol when he flings off his sun safety gear.
