Q&A with Author Frank Fiore
Thrillers, action/adventures, SciFi
Did you write as a child?
I wrote the first few chapter of a novel when I was a freshman in high school. My English teacher thought it was pretty good but I didn't follow up on it because I became interested in girls.
What do you feel are your earliest influences on your writing?
The authors of the Golden Age of Science fiction Bradbury, Asimov, Heinlein and others.
What do you think are your most recent influences on your writing?
Watching movies. Movies. Movies. And more movies. I write my stories as movies. I learned a lot from them in plotting, character development, pacing, etc.
Tell me about your recent writing? Do you prefer short stories, novels, novellas?
In fact, I just finished the first three episodes of an episodic book of short stories. The book is called THE ORACLE and is a combination of the Illustrated Man by Ray Bradbury and the Twilight Zone. Each of the stories ends with a trick ending like Jeffery Archers short stories. I am also
finishing up my 5th novel. It's the first time I have written mainstream fiction.
It's called MURRAN and it's the story of a young African American boy who becomes involved with the drug gang culture in the early 80s in New York. Then in a plot twist he goes to Africa and learns what true Black Africans and their culture are really like in a Maasai tribe. He goes through the 'rites of passage' as a Maasai warrior then returns to New York to confront the gang leader that framed him for murder.
Do you find the writing community online to be helpful?
Somewhat. Usually I rely on my past experiences and the editors and story polishers that make my books marketable.
What would you most like to do, which you haven't already, that would help
with your writing?
Find an agent.
Any great lines you would love to have written?
I have some pretty good lines in my stories but I like many of the lines in the movie Casablanca like this one. Here the writer has to explain why Rick is there and comes up with a great response.
"Why did you come to Casablanca, Rick?"
"I came for the waters."
"There's no water in Casablanca. It's a desert."
"I was misinformed."
Would love to write lines like that.
